Listen up: Hearing aids help more than hearing

Hearing aids may help safeguard memory and thinking skills in older adults, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

The study, which included 137 older adults with major hearing loss, 1,139 seniors with moderate hearing issues and 2,394 people with no hearing trouble, hearing loss was significantly associated with greater cognitive decline scores at the start of the study and during a 25-year follow-up period. Study participants with hearing loss, but not those who had hearing loss and used hearing aids, experienced greater declines in cognitive function during follow-up compared with people serving as controls in the study.
