McKnight’s Senior Living has received two awards in the 2018 American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors ASHPE Awards competition, the society announced Monday.

Senior Editor Lois A. Bowers earned a Silver Award in the Best Blog category for her weekly blog. The entry was judged based on three blogs in particular:

  • Breaking free of industry stereotypes, in which Bowers wrote about why a lauded commercial that went viral via social and traditional media serves as another wake-up call to the senior living industry.
  • ADA compliance: Will you be the next one sued? in which Bowers shared tips from architects and others to help readers meet the needs of residents and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Fire safety advice from the pros, in which Bowers shared tips from fire safety experts and other resources to help readers who may have needed to re-examine their emergency preparedness plans in the wake of two fires affecting senior living communities on opposite sides of the country.

McKnight’s Senior Living also won a Bronze Award in the Best E-Newsletter category. Named on the award were Bowers, Editorial Director John O’Connor and Art Director Mark Speakman.

The entry was judged based on the Oct. 11, 2017, edition. That edition included new articles about a five-year study by the Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging and Northwestern University aiming to prove benefits of life plan community living, a Brookdale Senior Living head nurse who was critically injured in the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas, and the evacuation and destruction of senior living communities due to wildfires in California.

The edition also included blogs by Bowers, writing about a new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that suggested good news for seniors housing and care operators, and Silverado co-founder, President and CEO Loren Shook, writing about a book in which he and co-founder Stephen Winner share the positive effects of memory care.

The ASHPE competition was open to all U.S.-based writers, editors and graphic artists involved in the healthcare publishing industry.
