Top states for retirement

A new list by Kiplinger ranks the top 10 states for retirement based on factors such as taxes, healthcare costs, the economy, the health of residents and the size of the population aged more than 65 years.

Based on data from sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau,, HealthView Services, Kiplinger's Retiree Tax Map, the United Health Foundation and the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, here are the top five states on the list:

  1. South Dakota
  2. Utah
  3. Georgia
  4. Tennessee
  5. Alabama
