March 7 update: Two more people now have been confirmed dead by the Baltimore Fire Department. Their identities and cause of death have not been released.

Two people died Friday after a fire at a Baltimore assisted living facility.

Firefighters responded to a one-alarm fire at Kozy Kottage just after 2 a.m., finding heavy smoke and fire on the first floor of the two-and-a-half story building, according to a press release from the Baltimore Fire Department. They remained on the scene until after 3:30 a.m.

“There were seven occupants inside the home at the time of the fire,” the department said. “Firefighters were able to pull seven people out of the home, six from the first floor and one from the second floor. Six of the occupants were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, and one person refused treatment. Two of the occupants were later pronounced dead.”

ABC reported that 40 firefighters fought the blaze. The TV network also said that state inspectors previously had found several deficiencies at the care home, including a lack of documented evidence that the manager and several staff members had current training in fire safety, basic first aid and basic CPR. Inspectors found that the home also did not conduct fire and disaster drills on all shifts as required by the state, according to the media outlet. The property owner could not be reached for comment.

The names, ages and genders of the people who died have not been released, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the fire department.
