A 77-year-old senior living community resident has been charged with felony vehicular manslaughter after she allegedly ran over two fellow female residents, 85 and 91, as they walked on a sidewalk. One of the struck residents later died, and the other was seriously injured but is expected to recover.

Santa Rosa, CA, police say that the driver, Gayle Gray, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the accident on Jan. 20, and also was distracted by a dog that was sitting in her lap. The accident occurred near Oakmont Village, the independent and assisted living community where the three woman lived.

Gray reportedly told police that she mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake when she saw the walkers. She also was booked on a charge of driving under the influence. The 85-year-old resident died Jan. 26.
