Lisa Welshhons to join Discovery Senior Living as senior vice president of HR

Lisa Welshhons will join Bonita Springs, FL-based Discovery Senior Living as senior vice president of human resources, effective July 1.

Currently, she is senior vice president of senior living enterprise account management and market development for Aureon HR. Welshhons has worked for Aureon HR since 2000 and has more than 20 years of experience in human resources, serving the senior living industry for more than 16 years. At Aureon, she has worked side-by-side with Discovery Senior Living as its official HR services provider and partner.

“Lisa possesses an intimate understanding of all facets of Discovery Senior Living, which she acquired while leading the seniors housing division at Aureon for the past 15 years,” Discovery Senior Living CEO Richard J. Hutchinson said. “She also shares our vision and philosophy of our expanding organization, which includes our newly defined internal human resources department.”

Discovery Senior Living is a family of companies that includes Discovery Management Group, Discovery Development Group, Discovery Realty Group, Discovery Marketing Group and Discovery At Home, a Medicare-certified home healthcare company. Discovery Senior Living said it wants an internal HR department because it is entering a new era of growth. With a new HR structure in place, the company aims to improve communication, corporate recruitment and compliance.

“One of Discovery Senior Living’s key strategic priorities is to ‘attract, invest in, communicate with and retain top talent in the communities we serve,’ ” Hutchinson said. “The desired long-term outcomes of this strategy include major initiatives to build an internal HR department that will assist in setting the tone for the company’s direction well into the future. In her new role, Lisa will work closely with the executive leaders of Discovery to accomplish corporate goals and try to maximize the employee experience while also increasing engagement and employment longevity.

Welshhons has an undergraduate degree and completed a certification program in human resource-related law. She is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management and has its Senior Professional in Human Resources and Senior Certified Professional credentials.

Mary Miller named vice president of innovation and experience design at HumanGood

Mary Miller is joining HumanGood as vice president of innovation and experience design.

In her role, which is a new one for the organization, Miller will help the company “incorporate more human-centered design thinking and experience mapping into redesigning and expanding the community living experiences” provided for almost 10,000 current residents at 84 communities as well as prospective residents, according to HumanGood. Miller also will help HumanGood pursue innovation in a systematic way that generates reliable, repeatable results, according to the company.

The position also is expected to help HumanGood develop middle-market senior living solutions for the majority of older adults who do not qualify for affordable housing and cannot afford or do not wish to look at the company’s licensed communities.

Dawn Jiménez promoted to vice president of operations at LeadingAge Florida

LeadingAge Florida has promoted Dawn Jiménez to vice president of operations.

Jiménez joined the organization almost four years ago as its executive operations manager. In her new role, she is responsible for overseeing the association’s overall operations, as well as its continuing professional education and events, group purchasing and event exhibits and sponsorships.

Jiménez is a native of the San Francisco area, where she began her career in finance with the Ford Motor Co. She later moved up quickly at Triad Systems Corp. (now Epicor), where she was a national account manager and the western area education manager.

Jiménez has a degree in industrial and organizational psychology from St. Mary’s College in California.

Terri Stamsos promoted to director of operations at Baycrest Village

Terri Stamsos has been promoted to director of operations at Baycrest Village in North Bend, OR, where she has worked for more than 30 years.

Stamsos started working in the kitchen at Baycrest Village her junior year in high school in 1986. After high school, she returned to Baycrest Village in 1989 as marketing associate.

“Terri’s hard work and dedication are incomparable, and her leadership has been invaluable,” said Jodi Guffee, chief operating officer for Radiant Senior Living. “Her 30-year service to the Baycrest Village has been an amazing gift to our residents and our team.”

In appreciation for her 30 years of service, the company is awarding her a trip to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.

Darly Joseph named administrator of Wingate Senior Living Campus at Weston

Darly Joseph has been named administrator of Wingate Healthcare’s Senior Living Campus at Weston, a continuum-of-care community in Weston, MA, providing memory care assisted living and skilled nursing services to older adults.

Joseph started working in long-term care in 2004 and has been in the industry ever since. He has held five administrator and executive director roles at senior living communities throughout Texas. Most recently, he served as a long-term care administrator for Childress Healthcare Center, where he led the community from a two-star to a five-star overall quality rating under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines.

A U.S. Army veteran, Joseph served in Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom. He has a Master of Science degree in dementia and aging, an MBA in human resource development and a post-graduate certificate in long-term care administration. Joseph is a licensed nursing home administrator in Texas and Massachusetts.

Travanse Living names executive director, sales and marketing director

Travanse Living at Olathe in Olathe, KS, has named Tom Inderhees as its new executive director and Mike Fraser as its director of sales and marketing.

Inderhees’ responsibilities include overseeing the community’s day-to-day operations and team management, hiring all department heads and care staff, and coordinating with the community’s management company, Integral Senior Living.

Before joining Travanse Living, Inderhees worked in information technology within the senior living industry. He is a graduate of Friends University, where he earned a master’s degree in management information systems and an undergraduate degree in computer information systems.

Fraser’s main role at Travanse Living at Olathe is to develop positive, lasting relationships between the senior living community and the businesses and organizations in and around the Greater Kansas City area. In addition to attending various community and networking events, his day-to-day tasks include helping residents and their families coordinate all aspects of the move-in process, developing annual marketing plans and organizing marketing visits to the community.

Before joining Travanse Living, Fraser was the executive vice president for Heritage Tractor. He also spent 30 years as the vice president of sales for Hallmark Cards. Fraser is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where he obtained an undergraduate degree in business administration and management.

Liana Foote joins Groves of Tustin as executive director

Liana Foote has been named executive director at the Groves of Tustin, Tustin, CA.

Foote’s responsibilities include directing the community’s day-to-day operations and team management, as well as working with the management company, Integral Senior Living. In addition, she will supervise and oversee hiring all departments’ leads and staff.

Foote has more than 10 years of experience in the senior living industry. Before joining the Grove of Tustin, she worked for Leisure Care as general manager of Newport Beach Plaza. She also held management positions for communities under MBK Senior Living and Silverado Senior Living.

Foote is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she obtained her undergraduate degree in gerontology. She also holds an MBA from the University of California–Irvine.

Sagebrook Senior Living at San Francisco names culinary services director, Vibrant Life director 

Steven Catindig has been named culinary services director and Amelia Elgin has been named Vibrant Life director at Sagebrook Senior Living at San Francisco.

Catindig will be responsible for staffing and training chefs for Sagebrook Senior Living, as well as creating the menus that reflect the community’s Dining By Design program.

Before joining Sagebrook, Catindig was the dining room manager for Redwoods Retirement Community and the executive chef for Rockville Terrance Senior Living. While in these positions, he gained experience in professional culinary management, food preparation and presentation and the senior living industry.

Elgin, as Vibrant Life director, will be in charge of designing activities with opportunities for residents to engage in well-rounded and meaningful experiences. She recently graduated from University of Nevada–Reno with a degree in community health sciences and communication studies.

During her collegiate career, Elgin had the opportunity to work on multiple health campaigns and projects devoted to promoting health and wellness in the community. She worked for organizations such as Northern Nevada HOPES and Step 2 Women’s Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Campus.

Theresa Cinq-Mars named culinary director of One Wingate Way

Theresa Cinq-Mars has been named culinary director at One Wingate Way, an independent living community in Needham, MA, owned and operated by Wingate Healthcare.

As culinary director, Cinq-Mars will oversee the dining department at One Wingate Way as well as Wingate Residences at Needham, an assisted living community located on the same campus. She will create seasonal menus, plan and coordinate functions, host cooking demonstrations for residents and serving on the campus’ management team.

Cinq-Mars has more than 20 years of dining services experience in independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing. Before joining One Wingate Way, Cinq-Mars was dining service director for a skilled nursing facility in Providence, RI. She also has served as dining service director of Wingate at Needham, a skilled nursing facility located on the same campus as One Wingate Way, and Wingate at Norton, an assisted living community in Norton, MA.

Cinq-Mars is a certified dietary manager and has an undergraduate degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University.

Brad Fuqua joins Eldermark at SVP of market development

Brad Fuqua has joined Minnetonka, MN-based senior housing electronic health record company Eldermark Software as senior vice president of market development. He will be based in Scottsdale, AZ.

His focus will be business development within Eldermark’s marketing division, which includes their newly redesigned Market Minder CRM, integrated Marketing Automation platform and lead-generation products.

“He brings nearly two decades of senior living-focused business development and national account management experience to Eldermark,” said Eldermark CEO Craig Patnode. “His industry experience and reputation as a senior living marketing leader will help Eldermark to continue its success as we introduce our marketing and technology solutions to even more partners across the country.”

Fuqua previously was vice president of SeniorHousingNet, part of the Realtor.com network, where he was responsible for the account acquisition and support of the nation’s largest senior living providers. His clients included many of the largest operators in the industry – Brookdale Senior Living, Holiday Retirement, Capital Senior Living, Life Care Services, Leisure Care and Belmont Village.

For the past 17 years, Fuqua has served on the executive board of the American Seniors Housing Association and was a member of the President’s Council of the former Assisted Living Federation of America (now Argentum).

Fuqua earned his undergraduate degree in advertising from Michigan State University.

MedOptions appoints new chief medical officer

Steven Powell, M.D., MPH, CPE, FAPA, has joined Old Lyme, CT-based MedOptions as chief medical officer. MedOptions provides behavioral health services to assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities. He most recently was chief medical officer for New London Hospital, a Dartmouth-affiliated institution.

Powell graduated summa cum laude from Clayton College and State University in Georgia with an undergraduate degree in integrative studies. He earned his M.D. from Mercer University School of Medicine in Georgia and his M.P.H. from the Dartmouth Institute at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Powell completed internships in psychiatry and internal medicine, a combined residency in internal medicine and psychiatry, a residency in leadership preventive medicine, and was chief resident in the departments of internal medicine and psychiatry, all at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Powell is board-certified in psychiatry and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He also is board-eligible in internal medicine and preventive medicine and is a certified physician executive through the American College of Physician Executives.

Powell also was the chairman for the New Hampshire Medicaid Waiver Program regarding expansion of substance disorder treatment in the state. He currently holds academic appointments at Dartmouth Medical School as an instructor in psychiatry and an instructor with the Dartmouth Institute.

Anne B. Newman, M.D., MPH, named clinical director of Aging Institute

Anne B. Newman, M.D., M.P.H., has been named the clinical director of the Aging Institute of UPMC and Pitt. In this role, the clinical researcher, epidemiologist and geriatrician will lead efforts to translate research into clinical practice and policy.

Newman holds the Katherine M. Detre Endowed Chair of Population Health Sciences and chairs Pitt’s Department of Epidemiology. She has served as the director of the Center for Aging and Population Health at the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health since 2006. She also has been a member of the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Medicine since her fellowship in 1985 and is the co-director of the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center in the Division of Geriatric Medicine.

The Aging Institute brings together the expertise of researchers, scholars and clinicians who identify and implement therapies for older adults and who support Western Pennsylvania’s population with resources for older adults and their caregivers.

As principal investigator of several major studies in Pittsburgh, Newman has conducted research that involved thousands of older adults for up to 30 years, making important observations on the causes and consequences of functional decline. In addition, she has conducted clinical trials testing lifestyle and medications to improve health span. Most recently, Newman has identified that the predictors of healthy aging include genetic and metabolomic signatures.

She has published more than 700 research manuscripts in journals. She is a member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Epidemiology Society and a frequent adviser to the National Institute on Aging, serving on the National Advisory Council on Aging and several review panels, workshops and monitoring boards.

Newman earned her undergraduate degree in biology, her master’s degree in public health and her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital, now UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Benedum Geriatric Center. She was appointed a professor in 2006 and assumed leadership of the Department of Epidemiology at Pitt Public Health in 2010.
