Presbyterian Senior Living appoints new COO and executive vice president

Dillsburg, PA-based Presbyterian Senior Living has promoted Dan L. Davis Jr. to senior vice president and chief operating officer and Jim Bernardo to executive vice president.

In his new role, Davis will be responsible for the supervision of PSL’s continuing care retirement communities in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. He most recently was vice president of continuing care operations and previously worked as an executive director as well as a healthcare administrator.

Davis has more than 23 years of experience in aging services, is a licensed nursing home administrator and has worked for PSL since 2001. He is an active member of LeadingAge PA, having previously served as treasurer for the state association and as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

He has an undergraduate degree in Business from Oklahoma City University and a Master of Science degree in organizational development and leadership from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

In Bernardo’s enlarged and refocused role as PSL’s executive vice president, he is responsible for developing affiliations and partnerships, new business development, communications, strategic planning and resource development.

He most recently served as COO and has more than 35 years of experience in aging services as a social worker, health center administrator and executive director.

Bernardo has served in positions of state and national board leadership with LeadingAge. He also serves as a CARF International surveyor in both the United States and Canada.

Covia names two new regional vice presidents of operations

Covia (which changed its name from Episcopal Senior Communities in March) has promoted Melody Mitchell and Chris Ichien to the newly created position of regional vice president of operations, effective June 4.

“As regional vice presidents, Chris and Melody will provide senior management support to their assigned regions. In this role, they will function as a complement to the chief operating officer’s support and service to Covia communities,” Covia COO Ron Schaefer said. Both also will continue in their current roles.

Ichien is the executive director of Los Gatos Meadows in Los Gatos, CA. He joined Covia in 2007 as the assistant executive director of St. Paul’s Towers, a life plan community in Oakland, CA. In 2008, he was promoted to executive director of St. Paul’s before taking the role at Los Gatos Meadows at the end of 2014.

Mitchell joined Covia in 2013 as the executive director of San Francisco Towers. She will be starting a new position as executive director of Spring Lake Village in Santa Rosa, CA, in June upon the retirement of Sharon York.

Dan Hadfield appointed vice president of sales and marketing at Elder Care Alliance

Dan Hadfield has been appointed vice president of sales and marketing at the Alameda, CA-based Elder Care Alliance.

Hadfield joins the nonprofit organization with more than 20 years of experience in operations, management and sales and marketing. He will oversee Elder Care Alliance’s five senior living communities, which located in San Mateo, San Francisco, Camarillo, Oakland and San Rafael, CA. The communities offer varying degrees of services in independent and assisted living, memory care and rehabilitation.

Before Elder Care Alliance, Hadfield was a regional director of sales and marketing for Integral Senior Living, helping lead the company’s network development and continued growth.

He has an undergraduate degree in political science from Oregon State University.

Amara Place names leadership team

Amara Place, an independent living, assisted living and memory care community managed by Integral Senior Living in Columbia, SC, has a new executive director, executive chef, Vibrant Life director, resident care director and maintenance director.

Kaley Patterson, executive director, has more than 10 years of experience in community residential care, progressive memory care programming and dementia care. She has developed and maintained working relationships with different facets of advocacy for seniors, such as long-term care ombudsman for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Candy Kennedy, executive chef, has more than two decades of culinary experience. After landing her first sous chef position at New York’s Park Avenue Bistro, she shifted her focus to helping the elderly. At Amara Place, Kennedy is tasked with providing meals that accommodate individual residents’ nutritional needs and preferences.

Ashleigh Brown, Vibrant Life director, gained two years of experience as the activities director for a nonprofit assisted living home. In her new role, she will provide daily activities designed to enrich the lives of the residents.

Robbie Sanborn, resident care director, joined Amara Place in April. She has been an LPN since 1991. She brings her knowledge not only with assisted living experience, but also with long-term care planning and wound care.

Sanford Rivers, maintenance director, has several years of experience in managerial and superintendent positions in the maintenance industry. His background includes building and grounds maintenance, HVAC maintenance and electrical installments. At Amara Place, Rivers is responsible for keeping the community running smoothly and maintaining its appearance.

Philip Burkholder hired as executive director at Integrace Fairhaven

Philip Burkholder has joined Integrace Fairhaven, a life plan community in Sykesville, MD, as executive director.

With more than 10 years of executive leadership experience in the senior housing industry, Burkholder will oversee the day-to-day operations at Fairhaven, as well as design and implement strategic plans for the organization.

Burkholder comes to Fairhaven after spending more than eight years with the United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz, PA, serving first as executive director and then as CEO. He also previously held leadership positions with Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, PA, and Garden Spot Village in New Holland, PA.

He earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from Eastern Mennonite University.

Sara Thompson appointed administrator at Broomall

Sara Thompson has been appointed administrator of Broomall, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Presby’s Inspired Life community in Broomall, PA.

Thompson comes to the position having previously served in administrative roles with ManorCare Health Services – Wallingford, Nether Providence Township, PA; Audubon Villa Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lititz, PA; and Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She holds a nursing home administrator certification and earned her undergraduate degree in nutrition from Cedar Crest College of Allentown and a certificate in dietary management from Northampton County Community College.

Chuck Flynn selected as administrator for Friendship Village assisted living facility

Chuck Flynn has been selected as the next administrator of Friendship Village’s assisted living facility in Roanoke, VA.

Flynn comes to Friendship from Carrington Cottage in Daleville, VA, where he was administrator of the memory care facility. In that role, he made significant changes to operations that contributed to streamlined communications and improvements to resident care, according to Friendship Village.

Three years ago, Flynn participated in the administrator-in-training program for assisted living communities. In addition, he recently completed his AIT for nursing homes.

Before his tenure as administrator at Carrington Cottage, Flynn served as the administrator of Bethel Ridge in Fincastle, CA. He also worked for Interim HealthCare as staffing director. Before entering the healthcare field, Flynn worked in the production and circulation departments at the Roanoke Times for many years.

Flynn earned his undergraduate degree from Radford University, where he majored in speech communications with a minor in psychology.

Kyle Hreben named executive director of the Village at Rockville

Kyle Hreben has been named the executive director of the Village at Rockville, a community sponsored by National Lutheran Communities & Services in Rockville, MD. He will oversee day-to-day operations while continuing to support the needs of seniors.

Hreben brings more than nine years of leadership experience in the senior living industry. He most recently was administrator of housing, overseeing housing operations, at Charles E. Smith Life Communities in Rockville, MD. He also held the administrator title at multiple other senior living organizations.

Hreben has been responsible for developing marketing and business plans, implementing various programs and coordinating strategic preferred partnerships with major hospital networks. He is a certified assisted living manager as well as a licensed nursing home administrator in Maryland.

Hebren has an undergraduate degree in communication management from the University of Dayton and is on track to graduate with an MBA in spring 2019.

Melissa Scarafoni-Metcalf named marketing director of Wingate Residences at Melbourne Place

Melissa Scarafoni-Metcalf has been named marketing director at Wingate Residences at Melbourne Place, a Wingate Healthcare assisted living community in Pittsfield, MA.

She has more than 16 years of sales and marketing experience. Before Wingate, Scarafoni-Metcalf was an assistant director of marketing for a senior living community in Lenox, MA. In 2017, after five years in that role, she was promoted to marketing director. In that position, she oversaw sales and marketing operations for 224 apartments, working with the executive director to increase the community’s census and build community relationships. She also was responsible for the community’s financial health and annual budget.

Constance Lafuente named wellness director at Parkway Place

Constance Lafuente is the new wellness director of Parkway Place, a faith-based senior living community in Houston, Buckner Retirement Services announced.

In her new position, Lafuente is overseeing programming in the community’s wellness center, which provides workout equipment and pools for residents to use, as well as fitness classes and personalized wellness programs.

Lafuente recently was an exercise specialist and director of group fitness for a personal training company, as well as a certified adjunct professor of kinesiology at Lone Star College.

Lafuente started her new role by surveying residents about their fitness class preferences. She plans to develop new classes quarterly and will add more strength classes. Because falling is a concern for seniors, Lafuente will target muscle groups that help prevent falls. She also will develop an incentive program which includes highlighting the healthiest resident each month.

Lafuente graduated from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with an undergraduate degree in exercise with a concentration in nutrition. She received her Master of Science degree in health education from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Primrose Retirement Communities announces several appointments

Primrose Retirement Communities has announced several appointments across its portfolio of properties:

  • Kari Alcorn is the new executive director at Primrose Retirement Community of Anderson, an independent living, assisted living and memory care community in Anderson, IN. In her new role, Alcorn will oversee the day-to-day operations of the community. She has eight years of skilled nursing experience.
  • Stacy Arendt is the new memory care nursing director at Primrose Retirement Community of Appleton, an independent living, assisted living and memory care community expected to open this fall in Appleton, WI. Arendt has more than 10 years of experience in senior living.
  • Renee Basham is the new director of nursing at Primrose of Findlay, an independent living and assisted living community in Findlay, OH. She is guiding and overseeing the care of residents and, in conjunction with the executive director, managing the memory care nursing staff.  She also will ensure compliance with all necessary regulations. Basham, a graduate of James A. Rhodes State College, brings nursing experience in intensive care and open heart surgical settings as well as in case management.
  • Fran Conner is the new sales director at Primrose Retirement Community of Mishawaka, an independent living and assisted living community in Mishawaka, IN. She has more than 10 years of experience in senior healthcare and has worked in home care, senior living sales and marketing and as an independent living administrator.
  • Lisa Davis is the new director of nursing at Primrose Retirement Community of Rapid City, an independent living community in Rapid City, SD. Davis studied business and accounting at Black Hills State University before obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing.  Since becoming a nurse, she has worked for Deadwood Hospital in the surgical and emergency departments.
  • Sherry Kappus has been named director of nursing at Primrose Retirement Community of Kokomo, an independent and assisted living community in Kokomo, IN. She is a graduate of Ivy Tech School of Nursing in Kokomo.
  • Patricia Spiegle is the new director of nursing at Primrose Retirement Community of Kansas City, an independent living and assisted living community in Kansas City, MO. She has been involved in nursing since 1996, working in long-term care, home care, oncology, surgery, pediatrics, emergency room and intensive care settings. She was working in a trauma center in Kansas City before coming to Primrose.
  • Kandi Stull is the new director of nursing at Primrose Retirement Community of Council Bluffs, an independent living and assisted living community in Council Bluffs, IA. She has more than 25 years of experience in nursing home settings and was a director of nursing in a long-term care community before joining Primrose.
  • Brenda Wilkinson is the new sales director at Primrose Retirement Community of Anderson, an independent living, assisted living and memory care community in Anderson, IN. In this capacity, she is overseeing all marketing and sales efforts, as well as public relations events and community outreach. Wilkinson has a degree in social work from Ball State University and has more than 30 years of experience in a variety of healthcare and residential settings.

Five Star directors re-elected

Donna D. Fraiche was re-elected as an independent director, and Gerard M. Martin was re-elected as a managing director, Newton, MA-based Five Star Senior Living announced Thursday.

The re-elections occurred at the company’s annual meeting of stockholders that day.

Quality Care Properties names directors

Quality Care Properties held its annual meeting of stockholders on Thursday and elected the following people to its board of directors: Glenn G. Cohen, Jerry L. Doctrow, Paul J. Klaassen, Mark S. Ordan, Philip R. Schimmel, Kathleen Smalley and Donald C. Wood.

Emilie Williamson joins Creating Results as vice president

Emilie Williamson has joined as Creating Results, a full-service strategic marketing consultancy with offices in the Mid-Atlantic and New England, as vice president of selling strategies.

Williamson brings almost two decades of strategic sales programming, regional sales management and business development to her new role, in which she will collaborate with client services to help clients achieve their sales goals.

Williamson previously was part of the sales teams at MatrixCare, where she led regional sales strategies and exceeded her quota within her first six months, and Senior Housing Net, where she managed $1 million in annual sales revenue and increased territory revenue by 100% in her first two years. At Senior Housing Net, she was named the organization’s top sales representative in the senior division twice and the rental division an additional time.

Williamson subsequently joined Valet Living as regional director of sales, in 2017. In that position, she oversaw the strategy for providing concierge amenities to the company’s customers, multifamily management and ownership groups. She was responsible for implementing new tactics to decrease revenue gaps and expand the company’s client base while maximizing existing business.
