Scott Moore named new executive VP of campus operations at Covenant Retirement Communities
Scott Moore has been selected as the new executive vice president of campus operations at Covenant Retirement Communities, Skokie, IL, a non-profit, faith-based senior living organization.
In his new role, Moore will work closely with leadership from CRC’s central office and each of the CRC communities across the country. He mainly will focus on dining, facilities management and healthcare.
“He will lead campus operations in the most effective manner possible while also advancing CRC’s strategic and operational initiatives,” CRC President and CEO Terri Cunliffe said.
Moore has 25 years of experience in healthcare, having started his career as a contractor, field architect and hospital engineer. Most recently, he worked for 13 years in various operational capacities for Florida’s largest continuing care retirement community.
Balfour Senior Living appoints new COO and vice president of human resources
Louisville, CO-based Balfour Senior Living has named Phill Barklow as the company’s first chief operating officer and Sara Thom as vice president of human resources.
Barklow brings more than a decade of experience in senior housing operations from his role as an executive director. He also joins Balfour with about five years of experience as a vice president of operations. Barklow attended California State University, Fresno, where he studied gerontology with an emphasis on business.
Thom, in her new role as a member of the senior leadership team, will work closely with the CEO and COO to drive Balfour’s strategies to attract, retain, reward and motivate top talent and top performance.
Thom brings more than 15 years of experience to Balfour. She most recently led a HR/talent management team of 25 professionals in an environmental consulting company with operations across the United States. She also has held positions at a staffing company, a software company and a major electricity and natural gas company with operations in eight states. Her multi-state experience will be useful as Balfour expands into other states, according to the company.
Thom has both a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and human resources and a Master of Arts degree in human resources and change leadership.
Phil Ginder named new CEO/administrator at Hodgeman County Health Center
Phil Ginder has been named the new CEO/administrator at Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore, KS, effective June 4. He will take over the position from John Broberg, who has been the interim CEO since October 2017.
Hodgeman County Health Center operates an independent living complex, Bramley Place; a 13-bed long-term care facility; a 25-bed critical access hospital with emergency room; and two rural health clinics, O’Shea Memorial and Spearville Medical.
Ginder has 22 years of service as an Army Medical Service officer and has held a variety of healthcare administration positions, including deputy commander for administration, U.S. Army Medical Department Activity–Japan, and chief of clinical operations division, Evans Army Community Hospital. He most recently was the chief operating officer of Munson Army Health Center at Fort Leavenworth.
Ginder is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and served as a board member of the Kansas Association of Health Care Executives from 2015 to 2017. He holds a master’s degree in health administration from Baylor University.
Benchmark Senior Living names new directors
Waltham, MA-based Benchmark Senior Living has a new regional director of operations, campus executive director and associate campus executive director.
Chris Golen, regional director of operations for all of Benchmark’s continuing care retirement communities, has more than 12 years of operational experience with Benchmark. He most recently was the campus executive director for The Commons in Lincoln, a CCRC in Lincoln, MA, where he oversaw the addition of assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing services. He is a three-time Benchmark award winner and recently was given the Darrell Harvey Values Award for his leadership in exemplifying the company’s values.
Reynaldo Leblanc, campus executive director, brings five years of experience in a variety of positions at The Commons, including successfully leading the opening of assisted living and memory care at the community. He has a master’s degree in management from Lasell College and has completed the Benchmark Emerging Leaders Program.
Holly Dineen, associate campus executive director, has more than 12 years of experience with Benchmark, starting her career as senior director of community relations for the company’s three Newton, MA, communities. Most recently, she was director of sales and marketing for The Commons. Dineen is a certified dementia practitioner and has a undergraduate degree in business management from Emmanuel College.
Gregory M. Shahum PhD, LNHA, MHA, OTR/L named health center administrator of Edgehill Health Center
Gregory M. Shahum PhD, LNHA, MHA, OTR/L has been named health center administrator of Edgehill Health Center, an all-inclusive continuing care retirement community in Stamford, CT.
He brings nearly two decades of experience in healthcare, academia and business development to Benchmark Senior Living. He also has worked and traveled internationally and has extensive director and administrator-level experience, according to the company.
Shahum said he intends to add value and lead by example to positively affect the Edgehill community.
Waltonwood Lake Boone announces new management team
Waltonwood Lake Boone, a family-owned senior living community expected to open this summer in Raleigh, NC, has announced its new management team:
- Richard Hiatt, new marketing manager, has experience in senior living and health environments. He attended Appalachian State University, where he double-majored in health education and physical education.
“I’m looking forward to working in the three areas of senior living we offer, consisting of independent living, assisted living, and memory care,” he said.
- Gail Honeycutt, new marketing manager, has eight years of experience at a sister community, Waltonwood Cary Parkway.
- Lauren Higdon, new independent living manager, brings almost a decade of senior living experience to her new role. Higdon previously worked as an activities coordinator at a senior living community and is a social worker who advocates for older adults. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in human development from Virginia Tech.
“I became interested in this field after volunteering at a senior center and completing an internship at a retirement community. Most of my time was spent helping with activities and engaging in conversation with the older adults,” Higdon said. “These experiences with older adults led me to the niche I enjoy most: senior living.”
- Katie MacGilvray has been named the new business officer manager. A certified dementia care practitioner, MacGilvray most recently worked as an activity coordinator and gerontologist in Richmond, VA. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology from East Carolina University and a Master of Science degree in gerontology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
- Shelly Levin, named the new life enrichment manager, brings with her a background in life enrichment and the creative arts world, as well as senior living experience with life engagement. In her new role, she will be responsible for developing monthly activities, including residents’ hobbies, excursions, entertainment and galas.
- Bryan Minton is the new culinary services manager. He has 15 years of experience in the food service industry, including working as a chef for troops overseas.
- John Carr, named the new environmental services manager, brings with him 30 years of experience in residential and commercial building maintenance and construction. He previously owned his own HVAC company and ran his own construction company for 17 years.
“I worked in retirement communities for the last eight years and have learned so much about different residents and about myself,” Carr said.
The community will have 121 independent living apartments, 39 assisted living apartments and 23 memory care apartments.

Allison Rodman named director of sales and marketing at The Point at Rockridge
Allison Rodman has been named the new director of sales and marketing at The Point at Rockridge, a senior living community in Oakland, CA.
In her new role, Rodman will develop relationships with residents, community members and local businesses and organizations in and around the Greater Oakland area. She also will attend various community activities and networking events while assisting residents and their families with coordinating all aspects of the move-in process, developing annual marketing strategies and organizing visits to the community.
Rodman has experience in marketing and community outreach. Before joining The Point at Rockridge, she was the community living specialist and outreach consultant for Alameda Elder Communities. She also spent 20 years in culinary arts and owned her own company, Creative Catering.
Rodman has an undergraduate degree in broadcast communications from the University of Oregon.
Senior Housing Properties Trust re-elects trustees
Newton PA-based Senior Housing Properties Trust has re-elected Lisa Harris Jones as an independent trustee and Jennifer B. Clark as a managing trustee.
SNH, a real estate investment trust, owns senior living communities, medical office buildings and wellness centers throughout the United States. The announcement came after the 2018 annual meeting of shareholders on May 22.
Gerald ‘Jerry’ Wilmink, Ph.D., named chief business development officer of CarePredict
Gerald “Jerry” Wilmink, Ph.D., has joined CarePredict, a venture-backed artificial intelligence-driven digital health company based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, as chief business development officer.
In his new role, Wilmink directly oversees the company’s sales and marketing activities and will bring the technology to new markets, including Brazil, Mexico, China, Japan and the United Kingdom. He also will be developing the market strategy for an in-home model of CarePredict for seniors aging in place.
Wilmink has experience in entrepreneurship, biomedical engineering and a range of technical, operational and product commercialization expertise. He previously worked on several assignments in the Department of Defense’s advanced research sector and numerous medical device startups. He founded WiseWear in 2013 after his grandfather passed away due to a fatal fall.
Wilmink has been featured on the Today Show, FastCompany, Mashable, WWD, Wired, ABC News, USA Today, JCK, Engadget, CNBC, Time, Money, Huffington Post, InStyle and BBC World News. He is on the boards of directors at Life Recovery Systems, American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, TechStars and several startups.
