A 101-count indictment has been returned against a former senior living community employee accused of stealing more than 3,000 items from 31 residents of 13 senior living communities spanning two Ohio counties. No arraignment date has been set.

Charges against Susan Gwynne, 55, include 31 counts of burglary, all second-degree felonies; 43 counts of theft, four of which are third-degree felonies, 12 of which are fourth-degree felonies and 27 of which are fifth-degree felonies; 12 counts of possessing criminal tools, fifth-degree felonies; and 15 counts of receiving stolen property, all first-degree misdemeanors.

The case against Gwynne began in January when authorities received a telephone call that personal items were missing from a resident’s room at the Inn at Olentangy Trail, an assisted living and memory care community in Delaware, OH.

“After the initial call, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office released a picture of the suspect, which had been captured on surveillance video at the assisted living facility,” Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien said in a press release. “Further investigation resulted in a search warrant being issued for Susan Gwynne’s residence and the seizure of more than 3,000 items, mostly jewelry.” Cash, credit cards, watches, Social Security cards and dog tags and other items also were seized, O’Brien said.

McKnight’s Senior Living reported on the investigation June 5.

After the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office posted Gwynne’s photo on its Facebook page, someone identified her and additional people reported missing items. The sheriff’s office previously said that the suspect was a former employee of a senior living community.

Residents affected range in age from their 70s to their 100s, O’Brien said. The indictment spans eight years, from April 2008 through March.

The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office is working on the case with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, because senior living communities in that neighboring county were affected as well.

“This defendant preyed upon dozens of elderly victims throughout Central Ohio for her own financial gain, and this type of exploitation must be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible,” said Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien.

Affected Ohio senior living communities identified to date, in addition to The Inn at Olentangy Trail, include Abbington of Arlington, Abbington of Powell, Brookdale Trillium Crossing and another unspecified Brookdale Senior Living community, Danbury of Columbus, Danbury at Parkside Village, Forum at Knightsbridge (Five Star Senior Living), Friendship Village of Dublin, Friendship Village of Columbus (United Church Homes), National Church Residences (community and location not specified), Sunrise of Dublin and Village at Westerville (HCR ManorCare).
