A licensed practical nurse at a senior living community in a suburb of Akron, OH, has been charged with sexually abusing a female resident.

Edward McShaffrey, 58, is charged with one count of fourth-degree felony gross sexual imposition, according to cleveland.com, the website of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The incident allegedly occurred at Brookdale Montrose in Copley Township on Jan. 16. The community offers independent living, assisted living and memory care.

According to the media report, a female employee told police that she walked into the 69-year-old resident’s room and saw McShaffrey lifting the woman’s shirt and molesting her. The employee told her supervisor, which triggered a facility protocol, then the community reported the incident to police. McShaffrey’s employment was suspended immediately while the community investigated.

Shawna Zody, manager of public relations for Brookdale Senior Living, told McKnight’s Senior Living that McShaffrey’s employment since has been terminated. “The safety and well-being of our residents are our highest priorities,” she said. “We have worked closely with the local authorities and the appropriate state agencies on an investigation of improper conduct of one of our associates. We previously performed a background check on this individual before his employment, and that background check did not show any cause for concern.” Brookdale continues to assist the authorities, she added.

According to Ohio records, McShaffrey became an LPN in 2004 and has no violations on file.
