CDC: Senior living COVID-19 guidance remains unchanged; ‘We’re not there yet’

“We’re not there yet.” That’s the message from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to operators of independent living, assisted living, continuing care retirement and affordable senior housing communities, as well as adult day centers. During a virtual session Monday about challenges and strategies for managing COVID-19, the agency said that its guidance is not yet changing for those types of providers.

Brookdale faces SNF lawsuit from coalition including Biden’s pick for HHS secretary

A lawsuit filed Monday accuses Brookdale Senior Living of lying to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to inflate the star ratings awarded to some of its skilled nursing facilities. The legal action, brought by a coalition including California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who is President Biden’s nominee for secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, also claims that Brookdale “ignored laws that protect patients’ safety when they are discharged from a facility.”

With COVID-19 cases down to just two per day in recent weeks within a portfolio serving 40,000 residents, and a 100% resident vaccination rate expected by the end of the month, Ventas Chairman and CEO Debra Cafaro said Tuesday that she’s feeling “cautiously optimistic” that the firm’s operators will see improvements in occupancy even earlier than predicted on its fourth-quarter and year-end 2020 earnings call three weeks ago.

HHS: Medicare overpaid Brookdale $3.3M for improperly billed claims for home health provided to assisted living residents, others

The Medicare program made approximately $3.3 million in overpayments to Brookdale Home Health for claims that were incorrectly billed for home health services provided to assisted living residents and others, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General said Monday in releasing the findings of a compliance audit.
