Subsidized unemployment checks often provide work disincentive

As hospitality, restaurant and retail workers were laid off at the beginning of the pandemic, many in the long-term care industry had high hopes that the newly unemployed might help fill desperately needed positions. The reality, however, seems to be an even greater gap in filling shifts as many certified nursing assistants opt for unemployment benefits during the pandemic, according to an NPR piece Saturday.

Ventas reduces quarterly dividend amid occupancy declines

Chicago-based Ventas slashed its quarterly dividend by 43% Friday, declaring a 45 cents per share second quarter dividend payable July 14. That’s down from the 79 cents per share payout a quarter earlier. The reduction came in response to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the real estate investment trust’s business, particularly seniors housing, and continued macro uncertainty.
