Pancake breakfasts, car shows, food truck visits, talent shows, spa days, concerts, trivia contests and teas are just some of the events that assisted living communities are planning to observe National Assisted Living Week, which began Sunday and continues through Saturday.

The weeklong celebration of assisted living, created in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living, has the theme of “Capture the Moment” this year. NCAL says the theme is meant to remind staff members to focus on the everyday interactions with residents that can ensure high-quality, person-centered care, and it’s also meant to inspire residents to seize the day and also reflect on important moments in their lives.

“ ‘Capture the Moment’ reminds us to focus on the things that give our lives purpose, to be present in the here and now, and to be grateful for every moment,” NCAL Executive Director Scott Tittle says. That’s good advice for all of us every week of the year.

“No matter the health or age of an assisted living resident, and no matter the pressures of a caregiver, we all have something to give each and every day,” Tittle adds.

If the past is any indication, NCAL will be recognizing one community’s efforts with an award for National Assisted Living Week Program of the Year at its 2019 annual meeting. (A 2017 program will be recognized at this year’s NCAL Day.) In the meantime, we all can keep track of activities taking place by using and following the hashtag #NALW on Facebook and Twitter. I look forward to seeing your posts there.
