St. Louis; Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, TX; Atlanta; and Tucson, AZ, are the most livable cities for seniors, according to a new scoring system designed by SeniorAdvice.com.

The system, called SeniorScore, is an algorithm that incorporates more than 100 data points from sources such as Medicare, the U.S. Census Bureau, and other government and private databases.

“Ultimately, we hope that all seniors and their family members will utilize this free tool as a consistent part of their housing search,” said SeniorAdvice.com CEO and Founder Ryan Patterson. The SeniorAdvice website also includes information for consumers about providers of independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, home healthcare and other types of seniors housing and services in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Of the top 24 cities rated in the system, the ones with the highest overall scores are St. Louis (79%), Austin, TX (78%), Dallas and San Antonio (76% each), and Atlanta and Tucson, AZ (75% each).

The overall scores factor in ratings in four categories: health and safety, recreation and leisure, finances, and general quality of life.

The health and safety score measures how well an area provides for the health needs of older adults. In this category, the highest-rated cities in the top 24 are New York City (79%), the Bronx (75%), Minneapolis (74%), Denver (72%), and Brooklyn, NY, Dallas and Austin, TX (71% each).

The recreation and leisure score describes the social and recreational atmosphere of a location as it relates to the amenities and activities generally shown to be valued by older adults. In this category, the top cities are St. Louis (74%), New York City and Minneapolis (72% each), Portland, OR (70%), Indianapolis (69%), and Atlanta and Seattle (67% each).

The finances score is designed to provide insight into the overall economic and financial favorability of an area. In this category, the highest-rated cities are Orlando, FL, and Atlanta (66% each), Miami and Indianapolis (64% each), Houston and St. Louis (63% each), Las Vegas (61%), and San Antonio and Austin, TX (60%).

The general quality of life score is based on several measures related to the general comfort and livability of an area. In this category, the top cities are Austin, TX (84%), San Antonio (84%), Tucson, AZ (79%), Phoenix and Dallas (75% each), and Las Vegas and San Diego (74% each).
