The widow of a man with Alzheimer’s disease is suing the assisted living community where he lived when his roommate beat him last February. Gerald Propp, 76, died two days later from his injuries.
Propp’s widow, Catherine Greway, is suing Atria Park of Applewood, Lakewood, CO, for false advertising, wrongful death and fraudulent concealment. Greway, who is seeking at least $75,000, maintains that the community did not do enough to protect her husband from his roommate, Homer Castor, 87, who also had Alzheimer’s.
Castor was arrested and reportedly admitted to the crime, but he was not charged in Propp’s death after being found incompetent. He died in November at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.
Atria Park of Applewood’s executive director, Lori Okeon, told McKnight’s Senior Living that she could not comment on the pending lawsuit, “but we continue to offer our condolences to the Propp family and all those affected.” Okeon said that the community has several safety and security protocols in place to protect residents and others, including around-the-clock, on-site staffing and checks on residents as indicated in their care plans.
