Are most nursing homes for-profit?
Yes. About 65 percent of nursing homes are owned by for-profit by for-profit entities, whereas 28 percent are owned by non-profit organizations. The remainder are owned by government agencies, usually at the city or county level.
About half of all freestanding skilled nursing facilities, or SNFs — or two-thirds of all for-profit SNFs — are owned or operated by chains. Many of the largest chains also have significant non-nursing facility lines of business, including home health services, long-term acute care hospitals and assisted living communities.
