Spring Hills Mt. Vernon Assisted Living in Alexandria, VA, held a dinner Jan. 24 for more than 20 federal workers affected by the partial government shutdown.
The event came one day before the president announced that the U.S. government would reopen completely at least until Feb. 15. The shutdown was the longest in U.S. history.
Dinner at Spring Hills included three courses, with additional options for children.
Residents, who helped serve the meal, also asked a local saxophonist to entertain those attending the event.
Spring Hills was one of several senior living communities offering assistance to furloughed and otherwise affected workers.
New York City-based Premier Senior Living, for instance, offered ongoing free meals to federal workers at all 23 of its communities.
Brookdale Tramway Ridge in Albuquerque, NM, hosted a free meal, and Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD, had announced plans to offer free meals to federal workers every Friday beginning Jan. 25 before the shutdown’s end was announced.
