The Pleasanton, CA-based HumanGood organization and the nonprofit Living Care Retirement Community in Yakima, WA, on Thursday announced plans to affiliate.

HumanGood, California’s largest nonprofit provider of senior housing and services, ranked No. 7 on the 2020 LeadingAge Ziegler list of largest not-for-profit multi-site senior living organizations in the country, up one position from the previous year. The company ranked No. 5 on the 2020 LZ 200 list of not-for-profit providers of affordable housing. HumanGood has 21 life plan communities and 96 affordable senior housing communities that collectively are home to more than 13,000 residents and the workplace for more than 5,000 people.

Living Care Retirement Community is home to 300 residents on a 10-acre campus that includes 188 independent living apartments, 39 assisted living apartments and 60 skilled nursing or rehabilitation beds.

“HumanGood’s mission is to help people live their best lives possible, and we are excited to join with Living Care Retirement Community, an organization that shares our same beliefs,” HumanGood President and CEO John Cochrane said in a statement. “Our united organization will continue supporting older adults in living lives of purpose and meaning from California to Central Washington and beyond.”

The organizations expect that, once the affiliation is approved by regulators, they will be able to leverage scale for greater mission impact. The affiliation also is expected to result in more opportunities for career growth and advancement for employees as well as added capabilities and resources for Living Care that typically not available to smaller organizations.

“This affiliation will help us continue our mission well into the future,” Calvin Groenenberg, executive director of Living Care Retirement Community, said in a statement. “We are delighted that Living Care will become part of an organization which demonstrates a passionate spirit in meeting the needs of older adults who represent a myriad of economic, cultural and religious backgrounds.”

HumanGood came into existence after a 2016 affiliation between ABHOW and be.group; the company changed its name in 2017. In 2019, the organization affiliated with Presby’s Inspired Life, which ranked 28th in total market-rate and affordable housing units on the 2018 LZ 200.
