A certificate in long-term care will be a new academic offering this fall at the University of Hawaii-West O’ahu.

The long-term care concentration is designed to address the needs of the growing older adult population needing access to long-term care services. The certificate program, under the Bachelor of Arts in public administration degree program, will provide students with the skills needed to lead and manage long-term care facilities and community-based services.

“As a growing segment of our population ages, along with the fact that people are expected to live longer, the need for long-term care is becoming more urgent,” Jeffrey Moniz, UH West O’ahu vice chancellor of academic affairs, said in a statement. “The certificate in long-term care is an attractive option for those already working in healthcare who might be seeking to enhance their qualifications, or students might pursue it along with a bachelor’s degree.”

Learning outcomes will include communication and critical thinking skills; quantitative, technological and analytical skills; diversity and organizational behavior issue identification; proficiency in management, quality care and risk management, financing and reimbursements, and policies and regulations; and solutions to long-term care policies and ethical / legal dilemmas.

The Public Administration Division is billing the certificate — which only will be available via distance learning —  as “suitable for those interested in future careers in nursing, medicine, research and biomedical-related fields.”
