Harbor Retirement Associates hires Karin Bateman as COO
Karin Bateman has assumed the role of chief operating officer for Harbor Retirement Associates.
Bringing 30 years of operating and development experience in the senior housing industry, Bateman will manage the 37 HarborChase senior living communities in 14 states in addition to communities still in the planning stages.
Before joining HRA, Bateman held roles from executive director to director of sales and marketing. Most recently, she was senior vice president of operations for Senior Lifestyle Corp. for 10 years.
Former Phoenix Senior Living exec Timothy Bush named COO at Honeybee Homecare
Former Phoenix Senior Living Senior Vice President of Corporate Operations and Acquisitions Timothy Bush has become the new chief operating officer of Honeybee Homecare. At Honeybee, Bush will oversee the leadership team’s daily operations, support the delivery of high-quality care and implement the strategic direction of the growing brand.
Bush brings to the role more than two decades of experience in senior living and care. He has spent the past five years with Phoenix, overseeing 62 facilities.
Riderwood names Fiona Divecha director of resident life
Fiona Divecha has been appointed the director of resident life at Riderwood, an Erickson Senior Living managed community in Silver Spring, MD.
Divecha has spent more than 20 years working in the senior living industry. She began her career at Riderwood as a communications specialist when the community first opened its doors in 2000. She then joined the community resources team as a coordinator before moving on to the role of philanthropy manager.
The past 10 years, Divecha honed her leadership and team-building skills as resident life manager, overseeing community resources, philanthropy and the campus television studio.
Bridges By Epoch at Westwood names Marguerite Kuriakose senior adviser
Marguerite “Maggie” Kuriakose has been named the newest senior adviser at Bridges by EPOCH at Westwood, a memory care assisted living community in Westwood, MA.
As senior adviser, Kuriakose will be responsible for all aspects of internal and external sales and outreach to the community.
Kuriakose has more than 25 years of healthcare experience. She holds a Master of Arts degree in healthcare administration from Simmons College and a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of Connecticut.
Volunteers of America names Karen M. Dale, RN, to national board
Karen M. Dale has been named chairperson of the national board of directors for Volunteers of America. Her two-year term began July 1.
Dale is market president for AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, a mission-based Medicaid managed care organization in Washington, DC. She also serves as chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer for the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies.
Dale has been on the national Volunteers of America board for seven years and was executive vice president of operations with the organization from 2004 to 2008. She also serves as a board member for Volunteers of America National Services, a division of VOA that primarily oversees housing, healthcare and associated programs.
Wohlsen announces Brian W. Laub as new regional vice president for Pennsylvania operations
Brian W. Laub has been promoted to regional vice president for Wohlsen Construction’s Pennsylvania operations. In this role, he will lead the operations team.
Laub joined Wohlsen as an intern in 2003 and has been a project engineer, project manager, senior project manager, project executive and, most recently, vice president of construction.
SAGE Four adds four new members to board of directors
Lorraine Carlson, Jonathan Carter, Rahul Culas and Roy Jimenez have joined the board of directors for LGBT elder advocacy organization SAGE.
Carlson joins SAGE’s Board of Directors after having worked with Planning Ahead for LGBTQ Seniors, The LGBTQ+ Center of the Desert and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
Carter is a litigation partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, where his practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and regulatory investigations. He serves on Sullivan & Cromwell’s Diversity Committee and is a leader in the firm’s LGBTQ+ Network.
Culas is partner at 1585 Healthcare, an investment firm focused on investing in businesses that facilitate the delivery of quality healthcare to older adults and other vulnerable populations. Formerly, Culas was a partner and managing director at The Carlyle Group, where he co-headed funds dedicated to energy investments. Before Carlyle, Culas was head of structured power finance at Morgan Stanley and worked at Goldman Sachs in the fixed income currency and commodities division.
Jimenez is a partner at TLD Law. He is a past co-president of the LGBTQ+ Lawyer Association of Los Angeles and the current president of the LGBTQ Attorneys & Allies Section of the Long Beach Bar Association.
LeadingAge Florida bestows awards at annual meeting
LeadingAge Florida recognized senior living communities, employees and residents during its recent 59th Annual Convention and Exposition in Orlando.
- As previously announced, Harry Hobson of Plymouth Harbor, Sarasota, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Pam McMullen, from Penney Retirement Community in Green Cove Springs, was recognized as the Caregiver of the Year for her 50 years of providing direct care and demonstrating dedication and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents.
- Mike Randall, at Assured Partners, Orlando, received the Chair’s Award for his role in strengthening LeadingAge Florida’s Political Committee.
- Ariana Fielder, from Azalea Trace, Pensacola, won the Emerging Leader award for her “initiative, self-direction and decisiveness at a level uncommon for such a young leader.”
- Patricia Wilson won Employee of the Year for her service to residents, her leadership and her commitment to innovation at The Terraces at Bonita Springs.
- The facility Air Force Enlisted Village in Shalimar was recognized for Excellence in Collaboration due to its “deep connections to the local culture and surrounding communities, collaborating with local businesses, churches, chambers of commerce, healthcare providers and numerous veteran service organizations.”
- Jaritza Smith from Amavida Living in Fort Myers was named Executive of the Year for her COVID-19 mitigation efforts and establishing a culture that LeadingAge Florida says has kept turnover rates well below industry averages.
- Sinai Residences in Boca Raton received the Innovation Award for using new technologies and best practices to enable employees “to spend more time nurturing resident relationships, to ensure resident health and safety, to drive operational efficiencies, and to become the first senior living community in the world to deploy new technology.”
- Sixto Antonio Acea achieved the label Service Coordinator of the Year for developing relationships across his community, Council Towers South in Miami Beach, that enabled him to bring services and benefits to his residents.
- Marjorie Phillips at Westminster Communities of Florida won Trustee of the Year for a 14-year commitment to her community’s mission as a member of the board, including five years as chair.
- Shirley Kelley from Sandhill Cove, Palm City, was named Volunteer of the Year for her help providing housing for the homeless and raising money to improve the lives of at-risk teens and their families.
Florida Senior Living Association gives awards at its annual conference
The Florida Senior Living Association announced the recipients of the 2022 Best of Senior Living Awards at its recent annual conference.
- The 2022 Employee of the Year Award was presented to Lynn Huber of Cypress Cove, an SLM in Fort Myers.
- The 2022 Caregiver of the Year Award recognized Theresa Ortiz with Forest Oaks of Spring Hill, a Senior Lifestyle community.
- The 2022 Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Fred Brummet, a volunteer at Inspiritas of Pensacola, a Retirement Unlimited community.
- The 2022 Sales & Marketing Director of the Year Award honored Vincent Ippolito, Grand Villa of Melbourne’s leasing coordinator.
- The 2022 Executive Director of the Year Award was presented to Dave Shymkiw of Coral Oaks, a Five Star Senior Living community in Palm Harbor.
- The 2022 Industry Partner of the Year Award honored Shawn McGregor, area executive chef for Healthcare Services Group.
- Founding board member Marian Nease was given the Distinguished Service Award. The association credits Marian, an attorney, with helping double its membership and becoming a statewide leader representing senior living communities.
Gerontological Society of America bestows 2022 Kleemeier Award on Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD
Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD, a gerontology researcher who has worked with the National Center for Assisted Living, AMDA–the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Gerontological Society of America and other organizations on initiatives addressing issues related to care, outcomes and quality of life for older adults, has been chosen as the 2022 recipient of the GSA’s Robert W. Kleemeier Award.
This honor is given annually to a GSA member in recognition of outstanding research in the field of gerontology. Zimmerman will receive the award at GSA’s 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting, Nov. 2 to 6 in Indianapolis.
At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zimmerman is the University Kenan Distinguished Professor; co-director of the Program on Aging, Disability, and Long-Term Care in the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research; and associate dean and director of aging research in the School of Social Work. “Her work is especially influential in the field of assisted living, the largest residential long-term care provider in the United States,” according to GSA.
In 1996, Zimmerman founded and continues to direct the Collaborative Studies of Long-Term Care, the largest ongoing research consortium of thousands of assisted living communities and nursing homes that have participated in more than 70 projects with continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and several foundations. Her research includes more than 50 grants on which she has been the principal investigator and 75 other grants on which she has served as co-principal investigator or investigator. From th0se projects, she has written five books, 25 chapters and 420 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Zimmerman is a GSA fellow, which represents the highest category of membership within the society, and previously was chair of GSA’s Social Research, Policy and Practice Section and an inaugural member of the GSA Board of Directors. She is the co-editor-in-chief of JAMDA–The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine and has been a guest editor for other journals.
