The $15 million Emerald Place, developed by Anthem Memory Care is expected to open later this year in Glenview, IL. Anthem is building two other communities in the greater Chicago area, too; both are scheduled to open this year.

The 43,000-square-foot Emerald Place will be able to accommodate up to 80 residents in a variety of suite choices, including private with private bath, private with shared bath and shared with shared bath. Each will include technology to help care staff monitor, understand and respond to individual resident needs while respecting their dignity and privacy.

The layout and features of Emerald Place, which is Anthem’s first two-story community, have been designed to further the company’s emphasis on helping those with dementia lead purposeful lives.

“Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s does not mean people have to stop living in meaningful ways, contributing and enjoying their lives,” said Isaac Scott, principal, Anthem Memory Care. “In fact, engaging those with dementia with purpose and social connections is tremendously beneficial and can even help slow symptoms of the disease.”

Two large satellite kitchens with bar-style counters are meant to encourage residents to participate in food preparation and will serve as a social gathering area. Two-story vaulted ceilings with windows placed over main gathering areas are designed to bring the community abundant natural light, which has been shown to benefit mood and energy levels for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. A secure outdoor courtyard will feature a circular walking path, a putting green, a bocce ball court and raised garden beds accessible to those in wheelchairs.

“This innovation in Emerald Place’s physical structure matches our creative approaches to care and engagement programs for residents as well as support for families,” Scott said. “We are looking forward to bringing this new and different memory care option to Glenview.”

The first phase of construction involves demolishing a vacant warehouse-style structure on the site. Working with Anthem on developing and building Emerald Place are CBTwo Architects, general contractor Adair Group and LTC Properties, which is providing financing.

In addition to the three Illinois projects Anthem is building a memory care community in Murrieta, CA. The company currently operates a dementia care community in Chico, CA, and four in Denver. Anthem is based in Lake Oswego, OR.
