Two New Jersey nursing homes have closed amid increasing costs and limited funds, despite receiving high marks for care provision in the past, according to a local media report.

The Armenian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Emerson, NJ, closed its doors after 83 years in business, and The Villa at Florham Park, Florham Park, NJ, closed following a 130-year run.

“[O]ver the last several years the Home struggled to compete with the growth of assisted living and home health care services and finally succumbed to the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” read a message posted April 2 on the Armenian home’s website.

The pandemic highlighted the industry’s existing problems as well as the need to address longtime workforce issues, Jim McCracken, president and CEO of LeadingAge of New Jersey and Delaware, told NJ Spotlight News. New challenges, such as the cost of COVID-19 testing equipment and extra infection control measures, also were an issue, he added.

“I certainly hope it’s not a trend,” McCracken said.
