ACOYA Shea, a senior living community in Scottsdale, AZ, is now open, Cogir Senior Living and Ryan Companies announced last week. The community offers independent living, assisted living and memory care.

“If you were to see this, you would not think of it as a senior housing project. You’d think this was one of the most beautiful condominiums or hotels you’ve ever seen,” Cogir Management CEO David Eskenazy told the McKnight’s Business Daily.

Eskenazy said that every unit is licensed, which means that the operator can deliver care and services at all levels with its own staff, rather than using an outside healthcare company.

“When we design the building, we design it so that it very much would appeal to people of all ages in terms of its design and contemporary feel, its open spaces, its dining, its art programs, everything,” he said.

The idea is for people to be able to age in place, with the ability to remain in the same apartments as their needs change, Eskenazy said.

The recently opened community has 147 apartments and a “town center feel,” featuring a courtyard, swimming pool and outdoor fireplace. Indoor amenities include an art room, a community room, a salon, a fitness center, a bistro and various dining options, a theater room and a telemedicine room for virtual medical appointments. A golf course and shopping are nearby.

ACOYA Shea is designed to attract adults younger than those in their mid-80s typically marketed to by senior living communities, according to Eskenazy. Those younger residents, he said, could stay as they age.

Some units have full kitchens, full-sized washers and dryers, high ceilings, modern countertops “and all the things that you’d be leaving when you leave your home,” he said.
