Kendal-Crosslands Communities broke ground Tuesday on a $56 million expansion and redevelopment project at one of its four communities, Kendal at Longwood, in Kennett Square, PA.

Construction at the continuing care retirement / life plan community is expected to last three years, the company said.

The project includes a reimagined health center and 18 new, ground-floor independent living apartments connected to the main building. The health center will have a medical clinic for residents as well as rehabilitation spaces, along with personal care and skilled nursing units.

“Person-centered quality services and programs positively impact the residents. Our thought leadership is the conduit to a supportive, caring community, and our health center at our Kendal at Longwood campus will embody our Quaker values,” CEO Lisa Marsilio said in a press release issued Tuesday. “Today, we are thrilled the newly reimagined center will be a transformative initiative that will address the needs of current and future residents and affect the field of aging, helping people to live their best lives.

One of Kendal-Crosslands Communities’ core values is environmental sustainability, the company said. With this in mind, the expansion and renovation project will include solar infrastructure to help reduce energy use, incorporating energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. Healthy materials will be used to reduce the carbon footprint as much as possible. Project designers also included water conservation and rain-water management in the planning process.

“I am tremendously proud of this initiative at the Kendal at Longwood campus. The fusion of natural surroundings, cutting-edge technology and modern sustainability measures illustrates the creative and empathetic solutions that our world desperately needs today,” state Sen. John I. Kane (D) said at the groundbreaking celebration.
