The Ensign Group announced the addition of nine skilled nursing facilities to its portfolio on Monday. Six are in Texas, two are in South Carolina and one is in Arizona.

The San Juan Capistrano, CA-based company said that the acquisitions were effective Oct. 1.

Ensign CEO Barry Port said that the Texas facilities were “a perfect fit” for the company’s Austin and San Antonio markets and said that Ensign had been eyeing them “for some time.” Keystone Care is Ensign’s Texas-based portfolio subsidiary.

The properties:

  • Brodie Ranch Nursing and Rehabilitation, a 120-bed SNF in Austin;
  • Onion Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 125-bed SNF in Austin;
  • Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 122-bed SNF in Austin;
  • West Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 125-bed SNF in Austin;
  • Lakeside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 118-bed SNF in San Antonio; and
  • Mystic Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 119-bed SNF in San Antonio,

Meanwhile, in South Carolina, the company bought Oak Harbor Healthcare, a 132-bed SNF in Mount Pleasant, and Oak View Health and Rehabilitation, a 190-bed SNF in Conway.

“These facilities represented a great geographical and strategic fit in South Carolina,” said Adam Willits, president of Hopewell Healthcare, Ensign’s South Carolina-based subsidiary.

And in Arizona, Ensign acquired the real estate and operations of Fountain Hills Post Acute, a 64-bed SNF in Fountain Hills. The real estate was acquired by a subsidiary of Standard Bearer Healthcare REIT, Ensign’s captive real estate company.

Ensign’s portfolio now stands at 268 healthcare operations, 26 of which also include senior living operations, across 13 states. The company said that its subsidiaries, including Standard Bearer, now own 107 real estate assets.

Ensign continues to actively seek opportunities to acquire real estate and to lease both well-performing and struggling skilled nursing, senior living and other healthcare-related businesses throughout the United States, Port said.
