Average assisted living community rates increased between 0.6 and 3.8% in 2023 nationally, depending on room type, according to illumifin, an administration and claims solution provider for long-term care insurance.

The action marked a reversal from rate trends seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which assisted living community rates had been trending downward, according to illumfin, which on Wednesday released its 2023 Cost of Care study for use by insurers, providers and financial services firms.

Nationally, the average monthly rate for assisted living was $5,188 for a studio apartment, $5,463 for a one-bedroom apartment and $5,310 for a two-bedroom apartment.

For studio apartments, Alaska was the most expensive state, at $8,728, followed by New Jersey at $8,207 and Delaware at $7,264.

For a one-bedroom apartment, New Jersey was tops, with an average monthly rate of $8,380, followed by New Hampshire at $8,043 and Alaska at $8,034.

For a two-bedroom apartment, New Jersey was No. 1 again, with an average monthly rate of $9,735, followed by New Hampshire at $8,331 and Connecticut at $7,474.

By comparison, according to illumfin, the average hourly rate for a home health aide increased 5.2% in 2023, and the average per-visit rate for a registered nurse decreased 1.6%, the latter potentially reflecting rates beginning to normalize post-pandemic. Skilled nursing facility rates decreased an average of 0.4% to 1% in 2023, according to the company.

Daily national averages for skilled nursing care in 2023 were $277 for a semi-private room and $316 for a private room. National averages for home healthcare were $31 per hour for a home health aide, $130 per visit for a licensed nurse, and $148 per visit for an RN.
