If it is true that all dogs go to heaven, Finnegan “Finn” Swanson already might be there. Ever since he started coming around The Danish Home of Chicago in 2014 with his owner, Danish Home President and CEO Scott Swanson, the Portuguese water dog enjoys having his run of the continuing care retirement community.

“He’s the type of dog you can bring to work,” Swanson said. “He’s cuddly, sweet, likes to be petted and is all around just a good dog that brightens everyone’s day.”

Although Finn might not be an official house pet for the community, he certainly puts an adorable face on it. He always is down for a game of fetch with his friends who have opposable thumbs, a few belly rubs or even a little snack.

“The residents really like having him near and spending time with him. The ones he favors are, of course, the ones with treats,” Swanson said. “Sometimes, he’ll even stop outside of a resident’s apartment door after sniffing out a treat or two. If he knows a resident has a treat in a pocket, he’ll sit there and look at them, not wanting to move. His true love is food.”

Food might be one of his many loves but, as the adage goes, a dog is man’s best friend. For Swanson, Finn not only is a friend but a trusted co-worker and commuting partner. Soon, the CCRC might have to set up an office for him.

“I’ve never been so attached to a dog before. I love my dog,” Swanson said. “I’ve had Finn around me constantly, day in and day out. I couldn’t ask for a better work companion.”
