Falls are dangerous for many senior living residents, but they are especially dangerous for residents living with memory loss, who are three times more likely to have a serious injury when a fall occurs.

To combat this situation, the Forum at Rancho San Antonio in Cupertino, CA (managed by Life Care Services) used VirtuSense Technologies’ VSTAlert. The community won a Gold award in the Quality category of the Senior Living track of the 2023 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology awards for its efforts.

The Quality category recognized the use of technology to improve the quality of services or care.

The provider said it chose VSTAlert because it could provide one-to-one monitoring of, for instance, in-room sitting without needing additional staff members or increasing the workload on current staff members. After five months of using the technology, The Forum saw an 80% reduction in falls with injury and had actionable data for its care team. The tech also helped provide tailored care plans for three frequent fallers. Each resident was monitored, and any fall incidents were analyzed by VirtuSense and the care team.

Other award winners in the Senior Living track’s Quality category:

  • Silver: Arrow Senior Living Management for its use of PointClickCare’s electronic health records system and Microsoft’s Power BI.
  • Bronze: Aviva Senior Living/Lloyd Jones for its use of Rythmos, from Intrex.
