Ski instructor. Tennis player. Optometrist. Author. Restaurant manager. Actor. Ballroom dancing instructor. Shaman.

Those are just some of the occupations Pui Tsang, or “Master Pui,” held before becoming a resident of Atria Almaden, a senior living and memory care community in San Jose, CA. And as if that weren’t enough, Tsang has learned how to wield a sword, saber and staff in martial arts.

Is there anything he hasn’t done?

“Fly an airplane,” Tsang recently said during an interview with Good Morning America. The national morning talk show highlighted Tsang’s efforts to help other older adults see that even as one ages, one can live a full life.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about aging is that you are resigned to being a couch potato,” he said, “but you can live an active and exciting life.”

At the age of 92, Tsang is still teaching, moving and learning in new ways. In addition to attending the senior living community’s Spanish classes, he instructs his neighbors on tai chi and meditation up to three days a week. He also is set to start teaching his fellow residents how to ballroom dance and will present a lecture on health and well-being.

“Teaching others is my biggest accomplishment,” he said. And when he’s not learning new things or teaching others, you’ll find Pui front and center in the community’s theater on movie night.

“He just exemplifies the kind of people that are changing the way we think about age and senior living,” said Bill Todd, spokesperson for Atria Senior Living.
