The RMR Group of Newton, MA, which provides management services for senior living operator AlerisLife and real estate investment trust Diversified Healthcare Trust, made progress last year toward reaching its environmental, social and governance goals, according to the alternative asset management company’s 2023 Sustainability Report, published last week.

“We recognize the importance of sustainability in creating value for all our stakeholders,” RMR President and CEO Adam Portnoy said in a video released in conjunction with the report.

Highlights from the past year include “48.3% waste diversion from landfills, a 33.2% reduction in scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (on target to achieve a 50% reduction by 2029), a 26.7% reduction in energy consumption and a 21.9% reduction in water consumption,” according to the report. Additionally, the company has begun implementing an on-site solar energy program in collaboration with tenants at several managed properties.

More of RMR’s assets earned EnergyStar (88 properties), LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (87 properties) and BOMA 360, Building Owners and Managers Association International (70 properties) certifications in 2023 than the previous year, with 245 total “green” building certifications.

The RMR Group also was recognized as a 2024 Military Friendly Employer. Portnoy said this designation represents the company’s efforts to support military veteran employees and strengthen connections with the veteran community and attract military veterans to work at companies within RMR’s portfolio.

“We believe sustainability is crucial to creating long-term value for our clients. Over the past year, we have continued to invest in and expand our sustainability services, further reducing the environmental footprint of the properties we manage and fostering positive impacts on employees, tenants and the communities in which we operate,” John Forester, vice president of sustainability at the RMR Group, said in a statement.
