Retirees in the United States, on average, have the third highest monthly pension income in the world, according to an analysis of retirement benefits in 44 countries by shopping platform Picodi.

The pension amounts of Americans were tied with those of retirees from Switzerland, at $1,913 per month. They were topped by pensions in Norway, at $2,017 per month, according to the study. Albania ($144), Moldova) and Ukraine ($123) trailed at the bottom of the list.

More than 47.5 million people in the United States receive pensions, according to Picodi, citing latest Social Security Administration data.

Although pension income is relatively high in the United States, the country ranked 10th in affordability of basic foods. Food accounts for 16.1% of expenses in the United States. The “food basket” used for the study consisted of 10 groups of products: bread, milk, yogurt, eggs, rice, cheese, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. For the same items, the best ratios of food prices to pensions were found in Norway, Austria and France, where food costs account for 13.4%, 13.7% and 14.3% of the average pension, respectively.

Prices for the food basket products, Picodi said, were taken from the numbeo.com portal, “where consumers from all over the world monitor the prices of food and other products and services.”
