North Dakota tops WalletHub’s new list of “hardest-working states,” and New Mexico comes in last. The list compares the 50 states across 10 key indicators.

North Dakota ranked first overall as well as first on a collection of direct factors including average workweek hours, employment rate, share of households where no adults work, share of workers leaving vacation time unused, share of involved workers and idle youth.

The state, however, ranked No. 46 as far as a collection of indirect factors including average commute time, share of workers with multiple jobs, annual volunteer hours per resident and average leisure time spent per day. Utah ranked tops for those indirect factors.

Other results:

  • Regarding average work week hours, Alaska had the highest number and Utah had the lowest.
  • As far as employment rate, Nebraska had the highest and California had the lowest.
  • When it comes to average leisure time spent per day, Utah had the highest amount and Wyoming had the lowest.
