A Scholars in Aging program at the University of Connecticut is training the current and next generation of social workers to address the needs of older adults. The Constitution State has the sixth largest number of adults aged 65 or more years in the nation, according to the university.

The Scholars in Aging program came about through a gift from a donor who is an alumna. It features specialized classroom and field training for the growing number of older adults living in the greater communities or in institutional settings. Senior living and healthcare service provider Masonicare is one of the providers serving as a field training site.

“As the world’s population gets older, the need for Scholars in Aging has grown,” donor Judith Zachs stated in an article posted on the university’s website. “This program is both the beginning and the future to educate students and experienced social workers to meet the needs of our growing senior population.”

In addition to field experience for students, the program includes lectures, small seed grants for practice-based faculty research with older adults, and continuing education programs for practicing social workers.
