2024 ASBPE Azbee award ribbons

Excellence in coverage of news of importance to senior living providers resulted in four awards from the American Society for Business Publication Editors for McKnight’s Senior Living editors and contributors last week.

The honors, for work published in 2023, came in the Azbee Awards’ Upper Midwest Region competition, which includes business-to-business media outlets in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The McKnight’s brands are based in suburban Chicago. The awards were bestowed Thursday evening.

“As McKnight’s Senior Living continues to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the brand, we’re honored by the continued recognition of our diligence and excellence in keeping senior living providers informed about matters that affect their success,” said McKnight’s Editorial Director John O’Connor.

Editor Lois A. Bowers and Content Editor Kimberly Bonvissuto took home a Silver award in the News Analysis category for “Quality, safety, accountability vital, industry leaders say, as Washington Post report cites deaths at ‘dangerously understaffed’ communities,” written by Bowers with additional reporting by Bonvissuto. The article detailed a package published in the Washington Post about assisted living and memory care community residents who had eloped and died — and industry reaction to it.

Bowers’ and Bonvissuto’s names also appeared on a Silver award in the Government Coverage category, for the brand’s ongoing coverage of government news of interest to senior living providers. Also named on that award were O’Connor and writers Kathleen Steele Gaivin and Aaron Dorman.

McKnight’s Senior Living editors and contributors also scored Bronze awards for editorial excellence in the Online Industry News Coverage and Print Industry News Coverage categories. Named on the print magazine-related award were Bowers, Bonvissuto, O’Connor, Gaivin and Dorman. All of their names also appeared on the website-related award, via which McKnight’s Special Projects Coordinator Foster Stubbs also was recognized.

McKnight’s Senior Living has earned 46 national and regional Azbee Awards since 2016, the first year the brand started regularly entering the competition after the former McKnight’s Assisted Living changed its name and expanded on its print publication by hiring Bowers in 2015 and adding a website, daily e-newsletter, social media and other offerings.

ASBPE is a national organization with the goal of serving and advancing the profession of journalism in business media brands and to encourage the highest ethical standards at those brands. The Azbee Awards of Excellence program is one of the most competitive programs for business-to-business, trade, association and professional publications. The awards recognize outstanding work by magazines, websites, e-newsletters, digital magazines, social media and blogs.

The three McKnight’s brands won a total of 10 regional awards Thursday. In addition to McKnight’s Senior Living’s four awards, sister media outlet McKnight’s Long-Term Care News won two Silver awards and a Bronze award, and McKnight’s Home Care won a Gold award and two Bronze awards.
