Sunrise appoints Jack Callison CEO; Daniel Guill to succeed him at Enlivant

Jack R. Callison Jr., CEO of Enlivant, has been named CEO of McLean, VA-based Sunrise Senior Living, effective April 1. Daniel M. Guill, Enlivant’s president and chief operating officer, will succeed Callison as CEO of Enlivant. 

Callison will become chairman of Chicago-based Enlivant’s board of directors and will assume a seat on Sunrise’s board of managers.

“It is a significant honor to be joining Sunrise Senior Living given the organization’s resident-centric mission that has been serving families for the last 40 years,” Callison said in a statement to McKnight’s Senior Living. “The strong Sunrise culture is evident throughout the organization and closely aligns with my own personal values. I can assure you Sunrise will continue to prioritize investing in our talented teams, building strong, trust-based relationships with our families and keeping the needs of our residents at the core of everything we do.”

Before Enlivant, Callison was CEO of Holiday Retirement and president of U.S. operations for Archstone. He remains a member of the medical center board of directors of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where he is vice chairman of the quality and credentialing committee. He also is vice chairman of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care Board of Directors.

Guill, as COO of Enlivant, leads operations across the company’s 220 senior living communities, including clinical operations, sales and marketing, food services, IT and facility maintenance. Before Enlivant, he served in various operating and financial roles at organizations, including Fortress Investment Group, Parthenon Capital and Performant. 

Also at Enlivant, Pete Smith, the company’s chief human resources and legal officer, has been promoted to chief administrative officer. In this new role, Smith will continue to oversee the company’s human resources and legal functions while also taking responsibility for the company’s regulatory, clinical and project management organizations. Smith previously held positions with PepsiCo, Burger King and AutoNation.

Commonwealth Senior Living announces senior leadership team changes

Earl Parker will succeed founder Richard Brewer as CEO of Commonwealth Senior Living as Brewer retains a part-time role as chairman. Michelle Hamilton will move into the role of chief operating officer, succeeding Parker.

Brewer founded the company in 2002 and led its growth from three to 33 communities over the past 19 years.

Parker has more than 30 years of leadership experience in roles in the hospitality and senior living industries. Before joining Commonwealth, he worked for Kisco Senior Living and Bell Senior Living. He also founded and led his own management company, The ELMS Group. Parker has led the acquisitions of more than 45 senior living communities and has supported more than 80 senior living communities across the country.

Active in Argentum, the Virginia Assisted Living Association, the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care, and the American Seniors Housing Association, Parker also is a past board member of the North Carolina Assisted Living Association.

As COO, Hamilton will oversee the day-to-day community operations for the entire Commonwealth portfolio. She is an active member of Argentum and served as a committee roundtable chair for several years. She is on the VALA board and previously served on the board of directors for Pennsylvania Health Care Association, also chairing its assisted living / personal care board. 

Trustwell Living names Gary Fernandez SVP, chief marketing officer

Gary Fernandez has joined New York, NY-based Trustwell Living as senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

Fernandez has been active in the senior living industry for 23 years, most recently serving as the senior vice president and chief marketing officer with Trilogy Health Services. Prior to that, he was vice president of national sales and marketing with Capital Senior Living.

The announcement of the appointment of Fernandez follows the announcement of the launch of Trustwell last month. The new company is led by Larry Cohen, former CEO of Capital Senior Living. Cohen also is joined by long-time Capital Senior Living colleagues Greg Boemer and Colleen Honnors, RN, BSN, who are Trustwell’s senior vice president of operations and quality and clinical director, respectively.

Retirement Unlimited names two to executive leadership team

Erickson joined RUI in 2016 and most recently was director of wellness for Bay Lake Community in Virginia Beach, VA, and regional director of clinical services.

Kisco Senior Living names Mizuki Sato-Berkeland national director of environmental health and safety

Mizuki Sato-Berkeland has been named national director of environmental health and safety for Carlsbad, CA-based Kisco Senior Living.

Sato-Berkeland previously worked in healthcare process and quality improvement at the UCLA Health System and has a background in community outreach and emergency preparedness. In her new role, she will lead Kisco’s effort to maintain a safe environment for residents and associates. She will be responsible for designing and implementing environmental health and safety processes, providing leadership on health and safety issues, monitoring the latest data and science and incorporating the information into Kisco’s policies, procedures and daily practices, as well as disaster preparedness planning.

Griffin Living names Bebe Reed director of healthcare operations

Bebe Reed, RN, has been named director of healthcare operations by Calabasas, CA-based senior developer Griffin Living.

Reed brings 25 years of management and operational experience in senior living, healthcare management, program development and staff education to her new role. She will help the company prioritize healthcare in its communities.

Reed has overseen 20 senior living communities in nine states, where she has trained executive directors in all areas of regulatory compliance. She also developed policy manuals for memory care, as well as state-specific policies as new communities opened.

Before working at Griffin Living, Reed was vice president of wellness and risk management at Thrive Senior Living, director of nursing services at Saluda, and director of health services at Pruitt Health. She is a certified dementia provider.

Juniper names Amy Purcell regional director of sales and marketing for the Northeast

Amy Purcell has been named regional director of sales and marketing for the Northeast at Bloomfield, NJ-based Juniper Communities. The role is newly created to assist the company’s leadership team in its planned expansion of managed communities in its portfolio.

Purcell, who reports to Cindy Longfellow, vice president of sales and marketing, will develop market strategy to attract new leads and build partnership resources for Juniper Villages located in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She also will be active in rolling out a new customer relationship management database management system, implement strategies for COVID-19 response, and train and coach teams at the building level to drive revenue.

Purcell began her career in long-term care as a nursing home administrator. Before joining Juniper, she was a regional sales and marketing director for a mid-size senior housing provider covering the mid-Atlantic states.

She earned her undergraduate degree in healthcare administration and a master’s degree in business administration at Villanova University. In addition to her NHA license, Purcell also holds a personal care home administrator license and an assisted living residents administrator license.

Arrow Senior Living adds to its leadership team

St. Charles, MO-based Arrow Senior Living has named Katie Cook and Mary Jane Harris executive directors, and Crystal Parrish, BSN, RN, and Brooke Glenn, RN, regional wellness directors.

Cook, a licensed nursing home administrator, will oversee day-to-day operations at Journey Senior Living of Ankeny in Ankeny, IA.

Harris was named executive director at The Boulevard at Wentzville in Wentzville, MO. Before joining Arrow, she was executive director at a Spectrum retirement community. She also is a licensed nursing home administrator.

Parrish brings more than a decade of experience to her new role, providing clinical oversight and support to 11 Ohio communities. Her previous roles include clinical nursing instructor and corporate director of clinical care.

Buckner Calder Woods names Shane Gabis executive director

Shane Gabis has been named executive director of Buckner Calder Woods, a Southeast Texas life plan community, by Beaumont, TX-based Buckner Retirement Services.

Gabis previously worked for senior living provider Life Care Services in various capacities, including for the past decade as a community executive director. He also was a team leader in operational reviews and a healthcare administrator.

Gabis is a licensed nursing home administrator in North Carolina, with previous licenses in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California. He is relocating from North Carolina to Texas.

Bridges by EPOCH promotes Sara Turcotte to area community liaison

Sarah Turcotte has been named the new area community liaison for Bridges by EPOCH at Westford, Andover, Sudbury and Nashua, a group of Waltham, MA-based EPOCH Senior Living memory care and assisted living communities.

Turcotte began her time at EPOCH as a life enrichment director at Hingham, where she delivered Bridges programming. She has served as a senior adviser, assisting families and caregivers with memory care, family support and educational resources. In her new role, she will expand her experience to support area senior advisers in connecting with professionals and organizations to coordinate resources for families affected by memory loss.

Turcotte has won numerous awards and honors, including the 2017 Excellence Award in Program Innovation from the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association. In 2015, she was named to Provider’s 20 to Watch list, which recognized senior healthcare workers who go above and beyond for the seniors they serve.

Wartburg names Rose Cappa Rotunno to leadership role

Rose Cappa Rotunno, a professional fundraiser with more than 30 years of experience, has been named Westchester County, NY-based Wartburg’s new executive leader for the office of institutional advancement (formerly development and marketing).

In this role, Cappa Rotunno will be responsible for the management of activities related to fundraising, donor relations, community relations, event management and other activities. Wartburg provides independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, home care and adult day services on its 34-acre campus.

Cappa Rotunno most recently was president and founder of The Event Department, where she annually produced more than 30 events and fundraising campaigns. She also worked for the United Negro College Fund as an area development director, for the American Red Cross as director of special projects and corporate relations, and at Pace University as assistant director for alumni relations.

At Wartburg, Cappa Rotunno and her team have been responsible for fundraising events such as Jazz in June, Music on the Meadow, Music Under the Stars and the Fall Festival. She and her team also were responsible for the return of The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function’s Music Has Power awards and produced the group’s 25th-anniversary virtual event hosted by Moby, which garnered more than 300,000 viewers on the social media platform Twitch.

CareTrust REIT names general counsel, SVP and controller

Real estate and healthcare attorney James Callister has joined San Clemente, CA-based CareTrust REIT as general counsel and secretary, and Lauren Beale, CareTrust’s controller, has been promoted to senior vice president and controller, the real estate investment trust announced Monday.

“Lauren and James have both been invaluable contributors to our success since CareTrust’s inception almost seven years ago,” CareTrust Chairman and CEO Greg Stapley said.

Callister has been CareTrust’s outside transactional counsel, a position in which he has been involved in virtually every investment CareTrust has made as well as the company’s more complex asset management work. “It was just logical to bring James in-house,” Stapley said, added that the move will enable Callister to participate in more strategic conversations.

Callister is a real estate and corporate attorney whose transactional experience includes representing clients in a diverse array of complex real estate and healthcare finance transactions. He has in-depth experience representing healthcare REITs and other owners of assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, medical office and other healthcare-related real estate in acquiring, selling, developing, financing (both bank and agency), leasing and managing healthcare real estate. He also has represented institutional lenders and investors, public and private companies, pension funds, hotel and resort operators and owners, and other corporate clients.

Callister has been a partner at the Newport Beach, CA, law firm of Sherry Meyerhoff Hanson & Crance LLP since 2012. Before that, he was counsel in the Newport Beach office of O’Melveny & Myers LLP, and previously served as assistant general counsel at Shea Properties.

Beale joined CareTrust as controlled in September 2014, just after launch, and immediately was responsible for implementing and establishing an accounting system to deliver timely and accurate financial reporting. Since then, she has continued to expand her role beyond accounting and into finance and investor relations.

Before joining CareTrust, Beale worked in global portfolio accounting for The Capital Group Companies, an investment management firm serving retail and institutional investors. Beale started her career at Ernst & Young, serving real estate clients, including several REITs, and also working in the firm’s Professional Practice – Accounting group, based in its national office. Beale is a certified public accountant (inactive) in California.

Ventas appoints Maurice Smith to board of directors

Maurice Smith, president and CEO of Health Care Service Corp., has been appointed as an independent member of the board of directors at Chicago-based real estate investment trust Ventas.

Smith has more than 25 years of experience in fiscal, strategic and operations leadership in the health insurance industry. He is a member of the board of the Economic Club of Chicago, World Business Chicago and Roosevelt University. He also is a trustee of the Civic Federation.

Smith began his career at Chicago-based Health Care Service Corp., the fifth largest health insurer in the country, and has served in a wide variety of roles, including business development, corporate transactions as president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.

Ryan Companies promotes Jim McDonald to president, Great Lakes Region

Jim McDonald has been named president of the Great Lakes Region for Chicago-based commercial real estate services company Ryan Companies U.S. He most recently was senior vice president and market leader of the region.

McDonald succeeds Tim Hennelly, who will rejoin the development team to focus on new business and mentorship. McDonald will provide overall strategic vision and operational leadership for the region in his new role. The Great Lakes region encompasses Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and the St. Louis metro area.

He led high-profile projects across real estate sectors, rising to the position of senior vice president of real estate development and market leader of the Great Lakes region before assuming his current role. 

He previously opened and managed Ryan’s Milwaukee office, where he grew Ryan’s healthcare business. At Ryan’s suburban Chicago office, McDonald expanded the firm’s senior living, healthcare and industrial build-to-suit business throughout the region.

Solinity appoints Kaleb Scharmahorn president of new marketing company

SA Digital hires new team members to manage digital solutions demand

Clay McEvoy has been named vice president of revenue operations for Iselin, NJ-based SmartLinx Solutions, a provider of cloud workforce management solutions.

McEvoy joins SmartLinx from Conduent, where he was senior director of sales insights, responsible for building a new function to create a sales data infrastructure and deliver in-depth reporting and analytics for strategic sales planning. Prior to that, he worked at ADP, leading a practice devoted to sales resource optimization in the mid-market and enterprise space.

McEvoy brings more than two decades of financial and operations expertise to the SmartLinx team. He led both sales and client services operations teams at Avaya prior to his work at ADP. 

Legacy Healthcare Services appoints Geoff Windley senior vice president, business development
