More than 1.5 million nursing home workers have been infected with COVID-19 and more than 3,000 have died since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a recent report from the AFL-CIO.

The 2023 edition of “Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect” marks the 32nd year the union has produced a report on the state of safety and health protections for America’s workers.

“For healthcare workers, especially those in high-risk settings, the risk of COVID-19 infection and death at work is not subsiding,” the report noted.

According to the union’s data, between December 2022 and February 2023, 220 nursing home workers died from COVID-19. That’s approximately 18 nursing home workers every week. COVID-19-related nursing home worker fatalities in that time frame accounted for 6.7% of all COVID-19 fatality among adults aged 18 to 64, the report stated.

The union noted that the data do not include fatalities among other healthcare workers, as there is no required reporting for other healthcare workers.
