The healthcare industry is leading all others in active job postings, according to a new study from the Schmidt & Clark law firm.

The attorneys analyzed more than 2.3 million job listings posted to Indeed.com in a two-week span to find which industries are most in demand in every state right now.

“The majority of states are looking to boost their healthcare workforce with roles such as medical assistants, nurse practitioners and pharmacy technicians, which are only some of the vacancies that employers are hoping to fill,” the report noted.

In the 14 days examined, healthcare employers posted 335,017 job openings, with the community and human services area ranking second, with 333,971 listings. The category of sales, retail and customer support ranked third, with 210,012 open positions.

Administrative and business operations; supply chain and logistics; and travel, attractions and events trailed in the eighth, ninth and tenth slots with 115,139; 106,781 and 92,785 job postings, respectively.

The McKnight’s Business Daily previously reported that nationally, the health/education sector added 17,000 jobs in January, and median pay increased 5.9% for people who stayed in jobs in the sector, according to the ADP National Employment Report, released last week.

State-by-state results

The law firm’s analysis found that North Dakota has the most demand for workers in all industries, with 1,369 job listings per 100,000 people, followed by South Dakota, with 1,043 listings per 100,000 people.

“The study found that the state had the highest number of construction and extraction roles available compared to other states (26.2 per 100,000 population) — but community and human services is the state’s most in-demand industry,” according to the report.

New Hampshire came in a close third, with the state seeing 1,042 new job listings of all sorts per 100,000 residents over the 14-day period.

“The state’s most listed sectors follow the national demand, with healthcare taking the top spot. Yet, the state is the No. 1 place for those wanting to work in sales, retail and customer support, as the state has 99.1 active listings in this sector per 100,000 people — more than any other state currently,” the authors said.
